New Production Facility for Hidrostal AG
Hidrostal A.G. is a family-run company located in Switzerland, which manufactures a range of specialised pumps incorporating a unique Screw-Centrifugal Impeller. The company needed a small production facility in which to pour relatively small quantities of a wide variety of materials for evaluation purposes, as part of their R&D programme. They also wanted to produce pumps in hard irons and duplex stainless steels.

The new foundry was to be built alongside the existing stores area and only 300 metres from a new residential development, in a country with some of the most strict environmental laws in the world. Cti designed and specified all the key elements of the new facility, ensuring that it complied with these regulations. Our project engineers had the ability and experience to work in all the different areas of production and to design and specify systems for casting the wide range of metals required.

The foundry was designed to accommodate both the Replicast® process and a block moulding line. Cti worked out a practical arrangement, and specified the equipment. The final design called for a 350kg induction furnace for nodular iron and high chrome irons and a 150kg furnace for steels. A combination of new and reconditioned equipment was used, saving the company a significant amount of money.

The size of the foundry presented its own problems as many critical items were not available for such a small throughput. Innovative practical solutions had to be found for handling, stripping and coating the moulds and, when it came to producing nodular iron parts, a new machine had to be invented to carry out stream inoculation in the very small ladle.
