Centrispun Casting
There are essentially two types of centrifugal or centrispun casting: horizontal and vertical.
Horizontal centrifugal casting is used in the production of castings that have an axis of revoultion, i.e. cylinders. Moulds can be expendable (e.g. sand moulds) or permanent (e.g. steel or graphite moulds). Molten metal is poured into the moulds through the ends of the rotating mould and the centrifugal forces throw the molten metal against the mould walls.
Vertical centrifugal casting is used where castings are not cylindrical, or even symetrical. Molten metal is poured into the top of the rotating mould. Again the centrifugal forces generated by this spinning forces the metal against the interior cavity under constant pressure until the metal has solidified.
The moulds can be spun at anywhere in the range of 300-3000rpm.
