National Vocational Qualifications

Casting Skills Centre is accredited by EMTA to deliver and assess NVQs. The Centre is unique in that it combines state-of-the-art facilities, which replicate the workplace, and it is run by specialists with many years experience in all aspects of casting. In addition it incorporates one of the world's most comprehensive collections of castings related literature, built up over the last 70 years and now searchable on computer.

Staff from the Casting Skills Centre are trained to carry out skills audits to identify whether individuals need further skills development or training in order to meet the requirements of the relevant NVQ. The Skills Centre offers courses in advanced technologies and in materials and manufacturing processes relating to casting.

The courses run by the Skills Centre have been specially designed to provide the underpinning knowledge for those working towards NVQs. To date, delegates have attended from UK casting producers such as Triplex Foundry Ltd, George Fischer Ltd, Skaigh Engineering Co Ltd, QDF Components Ltd, William Cook Holbrook Precision, Sheffield Forgemasters Rolls Ltd and Technical Industrial Casting Co., as well as from Norwegian producers Scana AS and Serigstad AS.

There are obvious advantages for the individuals gaining a nationally recognised qualification. In addition, companies are seeing their investment paid back several fold, in some cases with almost immediate effect. One delegate reported back that he had doubled the weekly production of a difficult casting through an improved understanding of the metal flow. To the delight of the customer, the quality of the castings also improved dramatically. Others are seeing the number of trial castings required to prove the methods for new products significantly reduced.

The Castings Skills Centre is approved to offer S/NVQ assessment and verification in the following qualifications.
