Titanium Castings (UK) Ltd - is a wholly owned subsidiary company of Castings Technology International (Cti). It was established on 7th August, 2006, to manufacture castings from titanium alloys (and alloys of other reactive metals such as zirconium) on a commercial basis. The company operates independently, with its own Board of Directors and is currently located within the new Cti facility on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in South Yorkshire.
The company will supply titanium castings, primarily to the UK aerospace and defence sectors. These are of strategic importance both to the economy and to national security. The emergence of a UK supply base would reduce dependence on the few overseas companies with the capability to supply to these markets, but whose capacity is being absorbed by growth in domestic demand. No less importantly, a UK supply base would enable intellectual property to be retained in the UK.
Titanium Castings (UK) Ltd will lease equipment and personnel from Cti in the short term. In addition, the manufacturing know-how that
would otherwise be inaccessible to a start-up company will be licensed from Cti. These facilities, people skills and manufacturing know-how are capable of producing castings to ‘air-worthiness’ standards.
Titanium Castings (UK) Ltd will also have access to state-of-the-art design and prototyping facilities at Cti, capable of producing fully
certified, production-representative components. It will benefit from new techniques developed at Cti that reduce the time, cost and risk
of new product development.
The melting capacity available to Titanium Castings (UK) Ltd is nominally 150 tonnes per annum, based on a single shift, 5-day operation.
The melting technology available – induction skull melting – eliminates issues relating to the availability of certified material. It also
facilitates the production of castings with exceptionally thin wall sections (1.5mm).
Two melting units are available, one of 30kg melting capacity and the other of 120kg. Both have a capability to spin moulds to achieve
greater control of filling and to improve yield. Moulds can be used up to a maximum working envelope of 1.2 x 1.1 x 0.65m, or 1.5m in
diameter x 0.75m high.
Titanium Castings (UK) Ltd has at its disposal the comprehensive design optimisation, simulation and rapid prototyping capabilities of
Cti that, by pre-empting problems, achieve faster ‘speed to market’. Access to Cti’s experience and resources also enable effective
solutions to be developed more rapidly in the event that any issues arise that require corrective action.
More than £500k of titanium and zirconium castings have already been made for the aerospace, defence, medical and motor-sport sectors.
The activity so far serves to demonstrate the functionality of the technology used by Titanium Castings (UK) Ltd. It also enables the
company to establish credibility and gain acceptance as a viable producer of high-integrity products for long-term, strategic defence
programmes, for example.
Titanium Castings (UK) Ltd operates a Quality Management System which complies with the requirements of BS EN 9100:2003, AS 9100 Rev B, BS EN ISO 9001:2000 covering the manufacture of ferrous and non-ferrous castings to customer specifications/requirements.
